Understanding a Denver Divorce

Divorce is a legal matter that involves dissolving a marriage, thus releasing the husband and wife from all matrimonial obligations. It also terminates all tax, health insurance and other benefits related to a marriage. Colorado is a no-fault divorce state. Either spouse may petition for a dissolution of marriage (the legal term for divorce in this state) because the marriage is irretrievably broken. This is the only allowed grounds for divorce in Colorado and all old grounds (adultery, abandonment, cruelty, etc.) have been abandoned. Spouses may allege wrongdoing in limited circumstances, as in domestic violence or drug abuse related to child custody or hiding/misappropriating marital assets related to determining property division.

Any Denver divorce may have the potential to be complicated and result in a great deal of time and money spent trying to resolve issues such as child custody, spousal support, parenting responsibilities, child support and asset division. However, these matters do not have to break the bank or destroy any semblance of a friendly relationship between you and your ex-spouse, partner or co-parent. Divorce mediation is one of the options we can discuss with you in order to resolve your divorce in as smooth and timely a fashion as possible.
