Child Support & Emancipation

Child support shall be deemed to end when a child is emancipated.  A Denver Divorce Mediator can discuss your specific facts with you further.  However, emancipation is defined as 1) when a child reaches the age of 19, 2) when a child enters active military duty, 3) when a child marries as of the date of the marriage, however if they child’s marriage legally ends, child support may be reinstated, 4) if the child is mentally or physicall disabled, child support may be ordered beyond the age of 19, including payment for medical expenses & insurance, or both, and 5) if the child is still in high school or an equivalent program, support may continue until the month following graduation. A child who ceases to attend high school prior to graduation and later reenrolls is entitled to support upon reenrollement and until the month following graduation, but not beyond age twenty-one.
